Djenné Manuscripts Library was created in 2007 by European Community Funds, USAID and the US Embassy. It is a unique library in the world in its conception and philosophy:
A Library of private collections in a public space
The library is a depository for manuscripts belonging to private families in Djenne. These families retain ownership of their collections, which are kept and classified per family. The family collections benefit from the library’s safe environment and are at the same time made available to researchers.
There is a great number of Arabic manuscripts In Djenne, some of which are many centuries old. The number of families which have contributed to the collection of the Library increases every month. Today the library represents more than 60 Djenne families which have deposited over 4000 manuscripts at the library.
